Anattā (Non-Self) and Paticca-Samuppāda (Dependent Origination) are the two most difficult aspects of the Buddha’s Teaching to truly understand. Yet they lie at the very heart of those Teachings. Anattā describes how all “things” are without a “self” being mere processes subject to changing conditions while Paticca-Samuppāda shows the causality of such phenomena.
Together they give a consistent and profound explanation of the subjective Reality of Life that the Buddha awakened to through his Enlightenment. In these two essays, Ajahn Brahmavamso explains the two topics and links them up, showing how avijja (ignorance or delusion) leads to attachment to the body and/or mind as a “self”, thereby generating the forces of clinging (upādāna) which power the endless cycle of rebirths through samsāra.
